Why we recommend a password manager

Silas Pippitt · · 1 min read

Your AskTask studio holds your work: your emails, your plans, what you promised other people. Keeping it safe starts with your password, and the simplest way to have a good one everywhere is a password manager.

The problem with remembering passwords

Most of us reuse a few passwords we can remember. When one site has a data breach, those passwords end up on lists that people use to try signing in everywhere else. One leak can open many doors.

What a password manager does

  • It creates a long, random password for each site, different every time.
  • It remembers them all and fills them in for you on your phone and your computer.
  • It warns you when a password is weak, reused or has shown up in a breach.

You remember one strong password (or use Face ID or Touch ID), and it handles the rest.

The two we trust

  • 1Password: works on iPhone, Mac, Windows and Android, and is easy to share with a team.
  • Apple Passwords: built into your iPhone, iPad and Mac, free, and already there if you use Apple devices.

We don’t get anything for recommending either one.

One more step: two-step login

Two-step login means that even someone who learns your password can’t get in without the 6-digit code from your phone. You can turn it on in AskTask under Settings › Account & billing. With a password manager and two-step login, your account is far safer than most.
